A Lancaster man was arrested for stealing a replica police car and leading law enforcement on a chase through Canyon Country Sunday.

Around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies spotted a stolen movie-quality unmarked black-and-white vehicle running stop signs on the 18600 block of Oakmoor Street in Canyon Country, just a short while after a male was captured on video taking it and driving away, according to Deputy Robert Jensen, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Station.

The victim confirmed that they had not given the man permission to use the replica police vehicle, and deputies initiated a traffic stop.

“During a traffic stop, the suspect fled on foot, ignoring multiple commands to stop, attempting to evade deputies, and obstructing the investigation,” Jensen said.

A containment was set up to attempt to find the driver and two other persons who reportedly fled the vehicle.

Nathan Belton, 47, of Lancaster, was arrested on the 27000 block of Furnivall Avenue in Canyon Country for grand theft auto and resisting a peace officer.

Belton remains in custody as of Monday morning.

The other two suspects who fled the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop were not apprehended.

Anyone with information about the chase is urged to contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at (661) 260-4000.
