 A man stole a marked police car from South Amboy on Monday, July 4, and the stolen police car got into multiple car accidents as it was driven north into Woodbridge, said Woodbridge Police.

The marked South Amboy patrol car was stolen by a 28-year-old Paterson man at 1:05 p.m. Monday, according to Woodbridge Police Capt. Scott Kuzma.

The man had an encounter with South Amboy police officers, assaulted either one or two South Amboy police officers and then stole their patrol car, said the South Amboy Police Chief.

South Amboy Police notified Woodbridge PD that the stolen police cruiser was headed into their town, and a short time later, the stolen police vehicle got into a car crash on Rt. 35 near South Park Drive, said police.

The car then continued north where it was involved in a second crash on Rt. 1 north near Avenel Street. The police car became disabled after the second crash and the suspect, identified as Jamil T. Robinson, got out and ran on foot north up the southbound lanes of Rt. 1.

He also attempted to enter and carjack several cars headed south on Rt. 1 before being apprehended by Woodbridge Police, according to Kuzma.

Robinson was charged with three counts of carjacking, receiving stolen property, assault by auto, resisting arrest, endangering an injured victim, and obstructing the administration of law or other governmental function.

He was transported to the Middlesex County Jail.
