1/27/22 Milwaukee, WI – Slumped Over Wheel Call – Man Brandished Weapon – Shoots Milwaukee Officer 3 Times – Steals Squad Car – Crashes – Gun Found In Squad Car – Captured

A Milwaukee police officer was shot about 6:25 p.m. Thursday night near 21st Street and St. Paul Avenue.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said the officer, who was working alone, was called because someone reported a person who appeared to be sick or injured and was slumped over in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, the man ran and brandished a weapon, Norman said. The officer and suspect exchanged gunfire.

The officer was shot in the stomach, shoulder and chest, sources said. First responders rushed the officer to Froedtert Hospital.

The suspect stole the squad car and left the scene. He crashed into another driver at 17th and Clybourn streets and ran on foot, Norman said.

He was arrested near 17th Street and Wisconsin Avenue — the heart of Marquette University campus — without further incident, Norman said.

The suspect’s gun was found in the stolen squad car, Norman said.

Norman said the suspect was a 22-year-old man who suffered non-fatal injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

The person in the other car was also taken to a hospital with non-fatal injuries.

The officer is a 26-year-old man who has been on the force for more than seven years, Norman said. He is expected to survive.

Marquette University students at one point received a text saying the situation was stabilized and there was no threat to campus.

Marquette police are helping with the investigation and students were told to avoid the investigation area.

This is the third shooting of an officer in two weeks.

Just Wednesday, a Milwaukee County deputy was shot.

A Milwaukee police detective was shot in the Third Ward on Jan. 13.

“It’s like one after another after another. It just shows you how dangerous this job is. My hat tips off to all the officers because they put their lives on the line every day, and this is the perfect example of what’s going on right now, and it’s scary because the violence in our city is out of control,” community activist Tracey Dent said.
