A man stole a police car before hitting another police car on Saturday in Olney, according to a Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Montgomery County Division statement.

Police said a Park Police officer was flagged down by an adult male at Georgia Avenue and Prince Philip Drive at around 3:30 p.m. While they were talking the man said he was having chest pain but then ran past the officer to his cruiser. Police said the suspect reached through an open window, unlocked the car and drove away after a struggle with the officer inside the car. According to Park Police the officer exited the car for safety purposes once it started moving.

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) became involved and officers chased the suspect for about one mile before the man hit an unmarked MCPD car on Georgia Avenue and Hollow Crest Drive. The suspect was charged with second-degree assault on an officer and motor vehicle theft after being released from the hospital following medical and mental evaluation. The suspect left the hospital Saturday night and was taken to the county’s Central Processing Unit (CPU), Assistant Chief of the Park Police’s Patrol Branch Captain Jeffrey Coe said. No officers were injured in the incident.
