9/28/18 Tomball, TX – Man Breaks Into Constable Deputy’s Patrol Car At His House – Caught In The Act Of Popping The Ignition – Unknown Intentions

Constable Mark Herman said his office received a call at about 11:15 p.m. on Monday from the Stonepine subdivision in Tomball about a suspected car thief.

“We don’t know what his intentions were with the car or what he was going to do. He was sitting in the car trying to get it started,” he said.

The constable’s deputies responded to the call as the subdivision is located outside of the Tomball city limits.

Sgt. Chris Burns with the Tomball Police Department said the patrol car was unlocked while an off-duty police officer moved items from the vehicle to take inside the house.

The suspect then noticed the unlocked car and attempted to hotwire it, he said.

“He did try to pop the ignition on it and the ignition locked up on him, so he couldn’t take it,” Burns said.

So far in September, the Tomball Police Department have responded to six vehicle burglaries which have occurred in business or apartment complex parking lots.

Usually, the cars have been unlocked, Burns said.

The suspect, Wahaj Usama, of Houston, was charged with burglary of a vehicle and is in jail, according to the Harris County District Clerk.

Herman said he was unsure why the car was being stolen.

“I’ve never seen it in my career where they’ve tried to steal a police car. I’ve seen them break into patrol cars and try to take equipment and guns out when people leave them in them. That really concerns me that this guy would be doing that,” he said.
