An incident involving a traffic stop and a stolen police car lands two people in jail. Police said they were trying to pull a car over when the suspects attempted to get away.

One of the suspects is accused of stealing a police cruiser. FOX13 obtained video showing part of that pursuit.

According to the Memphis Police Department, it all started when officers conducted a stop on a car involved in a robbery. The suspects are accused of trying to escape the traffic stop. MPD reports one of the suspects was captured right away. The other took off in a police car.

The footage shows the intersection of Hollywood and James Road. Police report arriving at that location at 2:06 p.m. Sunday. The video shows the moments three police cars trail each other into a Frayser-area gas station. The officers then exit the parking lot back onto the street.

FOX13 also obtained another angle that shows a fourth squad car pulling into the middle lane. An officer jumps out and is seen urgently running toward traffic. The officer backs up and runs forward again before getting back into the squad car to follow behind the other MPD vehicles.

It’s unclear at what point the suspect allegedly steals the police car.

“If you’re going to steal something, why steal something where you’re going to get caught? Why would you steal a cop car?” asked Dennis Treadwell, who told FOX13 he witnessed the arrest.

Police report pursuing the stolen squad car to Mountain Terrace Street near James Road, where the suspect was arrested. The family that lives in that home told FOX13 they know the suspect and refer to him as their grandson.

“The one that they slam dunked over there, he’s our play grandson,” Oliver Robinson explained. “I heard all those sirens coming up here, and I said, ‘What they coming up here for?’ That’s when my grandson was knocking on the door. I seen him run around, and he come around on that side, and they slam dunked him like he was a sack or something.”

Robinson also told FOX13 the suspect is 15 years old. We’re still working to confirm the age with police.

Meanwhile, according to police, both suspects are in custody. MPD reports that none of its officers were injured.
