A woman who had been detained by California Highway Patrol officers climbed into the front seat of a patrol car and took off in the vehicle Saturday, leading officers on a miles-long chase.
Stockton CHP officers handcuffed and detained Delia Castro, 21, after encountering her on Highway 99 near Fremont Street around 11 a.m., according to a CHP news release.
She was detained because she was “a pedestrian on the freeway,” CHP said.
After being placed in the back of a patrol car, at some point Castro climbed into the driver’s seat and drove away, according to CHP.
Officers pursued Castro for several miles. She then got onto southbound Interstate 5, exited the interstate at Lathrop Road and drove west “a short distance” before making a U-turn and coming to a stop, CHP said.
Castro was taken into custody and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail. She’s facing charges for stealing a vehicle, evading officers and resisting arrest.
CHP said it’s “unknown at this point” if Castro was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
