A traffic stop in Two Rivers late Wednesday night led to a pursuit into Manitowoc and an arrest after the driver allegedly hit a police vehicle, crashed and tried to take a squad car, according to the Two Rivers Police Department.
Police said officers stopped a vehicle around 10 p.m. June 24 in the 1500 block of 20th Street after seeing traffic violations. Officers said they noticed signs the driver was impaired and later identified him as 29-year-old Brennon Toltzmann of Newton.
When officers told Toltzmann to get out of the vehicle, police said he drove off, leading officers to begin a pursuit for public safety reasons. Police said the pursuit went about nine miles into Manitowoc.
During the chase, police said Toltzmann intentionally struck a marked patrol vehicle, drove off-road in an attempt to get away and then crashed near the intersection of North 10th Street and Waldo Boulevard. Police said he then tried to flee again in the disabled vehicle before getting out.
Police said Toltzmann then tried to steal a marked squad car, and officers used a Taser to take him into custody.
Toltzmann was arrested on a probation hold and also faces the following alleged offenses, police said: operating while under the influence (third offense), fleeing or eluding an officer, recklessly endangering safety, resisting or obstructing an officer, attempting to operate a vehicle without the owner’s consent and criminal damage to property. Police said additional charges could be requested as the investigation continues.
Police said three Two Rivers Police Department squad vehicles were damaged. No officers or members of the public were injured, according to the department.
The Two Rivers Police Department said it was assisted by the Manitowoc Police Department and the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office.
