TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. — Body-worn camera video captured chaotic moments when a man led deputies on a pursuit in a stolen patrol vehicle, eventually crashing it and leading to an officer-involved shooting, KRQE reports.
On April 30, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a report of a man, identified as Abraham Quezada, jumping in and out of vehicles on a dark highway near Truth or Consequences. Deputies said Quezada jumped out of a moving car and into the bed of a stranger’s pickup truck before jumping back out.
When a deputy made contact with Quezada, he was covered in road rash. Quezada then walked away, closely followed by the deputy until they reached the deputy’s backup, a New Mexico State Police trooper.
Quezada then ran away and took off in the deputy’s patrol vehicle, which was left unlocked. The deputy and the trooper began firing shots at the stolen patrol vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
The pursuit eventually ended when Quezada crashed head-on into the state police SUV. When troopers pulled him from the damaged vehicle, his legs were too mangled to see if he was shot or not.
Quezada was charged with two counts of aggravated assault upon a peace officer with a deadly weapon and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
