A Rock Island police officer was injured after police said he was dragged while trying to stop a teen from driving off with his squad car and K-9 on Monday afternoon.
A 16-year-old and an 18-year-old have been arrested in connection with the incident.
A stolen Kia was speeding on 7th Avenue in Rock Island and hit another car while attempting to turn onto 15th Street around 1 p.m, according to the Rock Island Police Department.
Police said the stolen Kia was seen driving recklessly several times, including intentionally swerving at officers, over the past 24 hours.
Police said they got reports of two masked people getting out of the Kia and running from the area.
While driving to work in a marked squad car, a Rock Island Police K-9 handler was flagged down near 17th Street and 7th Avenue by people pointing out the running people. The officer radioed the information and tried to find them.
He found 18-year-old Tayshawn Clark when he got to 19th Street and 6th Avenue and got out of his car to detain Clark.
While the officer was struggling with Clark, Clarkâs 16-year-old brother got into the squad car and began to drive away. The officer tried to regain control of his car but was dragged through the parking lot and was injured.
Clark was taken into custody in Rock Island. He was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting a peace officer.
The 16-year-old drove to Davenport after the officer fell from the car. There were no firearms in the car, but K-9 Blue was in the kennel.
Police tracked the car and the Davenport Police Department found the car abandoned in the 1900 block of Dixwell Street.
The 16-year-old was found by the Davenport police in a nearby home and he was taken into custody for an existing warrant for escape. Police said more charges are pending.
KWQC-TV6 crews at the scene about 3 p.m. saw officers enter the home and leave with bags of evidence.
The officer was taken to a local hospital and later released. K-9 Blue was found safe in the car.
