A man was shot and killed by a police officer on Monday afternoon after authorities say he stole patrol vehicle and led cops on a chase following a crash in Atlantic County.

Police in Franklin Township, Gloucester County responded to provide mutual aid after a crash near the intersection of Cumberland Road and Tuckahoe Road in Buena Vista, Atlantic County around 3 p.m., the state Office of the Attorney General said Tuesday.

After a Franklin officer got out his police vehicle, one of the drivers involved in the crash jumped in the patrol car and drove away, officials said.

Police then pursued the stolen patrol car, 6abc.com reported.

The man stopped the police car on East Oak Road in Buena Vista and an “encounter” with police ensued, according to the Attorney General’s office, which investigates shootings involving police. During the altercation, a Franklin officer shot and killed the man.

Neither the identity of the man nor the police officer was disclosed. The attorney general’s office declined to offer additional information about the shooting or say whether the man was armed.
