A suspect killed his mother in southwest Las Vegas Wednesday morning and stole a police cruiser before carjacking three different people, killing one, according to police and 8 News Now Investigators sources.

According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officials, the incident began at 3:46 a.m., when dispatchers received a call about a shooting at Placid Street and Maulding Avenue in southeast Las Vegas.

LVMPD officials say the suspect’s mother and father were in the area and heard gunshots near the family’s home. They were looking for their son, police said, when the mother, identified as a woman in her 50s, was struck by shots fired from the suspect, her son, identified as a man in his 30s. The woman died on the scene.

When officers arrived, they heard shooting and took cover, police said. A police cruiser was struck in the gunfire. While officers were not injured in that shooting, the suspect was able to steal a patrol vehicle and take off.

Officers pursued the stolen cruiser to the 7300 block of South Durango, where the suspect abandoned the patrol vehicle, carjacked a person, and took off again. The pursuit continued to the 8500 block of Blue Diamond, where the suspect used a firearm to carjack another person. According to police, an officer saw the carjacking and fired at the suspect before the suspect took off again.

The chase continued to Windmill Lane and Durango Drive, where the suspect abandoned the last carjacked vehicle and pointed his firearm at a citizen in a van, firing the gun. 8 News Now Investigators sources say the victim in the van was killed. Officers said the suspect removed the victim from the vehicle before officers fired at the vehicle as the suspect took off, striking the vehicle.

At Durango Drive and Agate Avenue, the suspect’s carjacked vehicle broke down. The suspect refused to cooperate with law enforcement. After there was no motion inside the vehicle, the Las Vegas SWAT Team arrived and determined that the suspect was dead.

No officers were injured in the incident.

A police cruiser near Durango Drive and Blue Diamond Road could be seen with what appeared to be bullet holes through the windshield Wednesday morning.
