Mounties say an officer suffered minor injuries and another person was wounded after an officer-involved shooting in central Alberta early Friday morning.
The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. when Blackfalds RCMP were called to deal with a single-vehicle collision on Highway 596 and Range Road 10. While responding, an RCMP member came across a second vehicle in the ditch with three male occupants.
As the officer stopped to see if they required assistance, Mounties say a physical confrontation occurred, leading to the officer suffering minor injuries and discharging a service firearm. The males then stole the police vehicle and fled.
The vehicle was found abandoned in a field near Highway 11 as additional units from Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, and other specialized units assisted in the arrests of the three males. One of them, Mounties say, was found to be suffering from a non-life-threatening injury as a result of the confrontation and was taken to hospital.
The investigation into the shooting and the actions of police has been handed over to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, the province’s police watchdog agency, while Mounties say they will continue to investigate the actions of the three men.
