A multiple vehicle accident Monday night leads to an unexpected chain of events for Tupelo Police officers.

According to investigators, an officer responded to the scene of the crash around 5:45 p.m.

The officer says while he was talking to the driver of one of the vehicles, the passenger jumped to his patrol car and drove away.

The patrol car was spotted a short time later in downtown Tupelo, and authorities say the suspect lead officers on a short pursuit, before he drove himself to the jail and turned himself into authorities.

The suspect is identified as Devante Buchanan, 22, of Shannon.

Buchanan is charged with felony auto theft, DUI and driving on a suspended drivers license.

Authorities say there was no damage to the police car and no one was injured in the incident, or the accident that lead to the incident.

Lee County Justice Court Judge Sadie Holland set Buchanan’s bond at $100,000.
