A 19-year-old man is once again in the custody of El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies, after he was able to break free and drive away in a patrol car Tuesday afternoon.

EPCSO spokeswoman Chris Acosta said early Wednesday morning that Alejandro Rubio had been detained.

This comes after deputies had spotted a stolen vehicle in the San Elizario area after 3:30 P.M. Tuesday. When deputies tried to speak with the occupants, the car drove off into a canal bank, and deputies chased down three suspects.

The suspects were handcuffed and placed into different patrol units when Rubio was able to free himself and take off in a patrol car, Acosta said.

Acosta said deputies later found the stolen deputy’s vehicle unattended on the 12200 block of Rojas Drive.

Rubio had apparently fled in a stolen box truck that was last seen headed east on Interstate 10.

El Paso police, Border Patrol air units and the Department of Public Safety troopers were all assisting with this incident.

Acosta did not say when or where Rubio was found, or what charges, if any, he now faces. More information was expected to be released later Wednesday morning.
