A man accused of stealing a Houston police car after an officer-involved shooting outside a northwest side motel, then crashing it into a tree about 10 minutes later, has been identified by Houston police.

According to a statement by HPD on Thursday, the suspect is Patrick Ray Castro, 26, who has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant.

Officer C. Massey was making a routine check about noon Wednesday when a manager at the Lisa Motel in the 10600 block of Hempstead told him about a man who wasn’t supposed to be there.

The man was in the passenger seat of a car in the parking lot, police said.

He got out of the car and pointed a pistol as the officer approached. Massey took cover behind another car at the motel, police said.

HPD officials said both men exchanged gunfire. The man was able to get inside Massey’s patrol car and drive away.

He lost control and crashed the HPD car about 10 minutes later in the 4900 block of Creekmont. The man was taken into custody and faces a variety of felony charges, including aggravated assault against a public servant and evading arrest, police said.

Massey is a 24-year HPD veteran assigned to the department’s gang unit.
