11/11/11 Lancaster, PA – Police Horse Stolen After Being Tied Up Downtown – Just Goes To Show – They Will Steal Any Police Transportation

A Lancaster, Pa., man is behind bars after stealing a police horse earlier this week.

Lancaster City Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Todd Umstead said Charlie, a 7-year-old draft cross was on patrol in Downtown Lancaster at 4 p.m. on Nov. 7 when the horse’s rider–City Officer Wayne McVey–tethered the animal to a post and walked down the block to check on business in the area he patrols. About 15 minutes later McVey returned to the spot where Charlie had been tied and discovered the animal missing, Umstead said. About a block away another officer in a patrol car spotted Charlie being led by a stranger.

“The man had the reins tied around his waist,” Umstead said.

Officers arrested Adam Christopher Schulz in connection with the incident. Schulz was subsequently charged with one count of felony theft, Umstead said.

“Charlie is valued at about $10,000, making the charge a felony,” said Umstead, adding that neither the horse nor Schulz were harmed during the incident.

What Schultz intended to do with the animal is uncertain, Umstead said.

“He lives in a row house in town, so we don’t know what he was thinking or what he was going to do with the horse once he got him to his backyard,” Unstead said.

Schultz is being held at the Lancaster County Jail in lieu of bail, said Umstead.
