An Ark City man was arrested Thursday evening for attempting to steal a police car during a DUI stop.

It started just after 6:30 p.m. when officers were called to check the report of a drunk driver in a Chrysler PT Cruiser, Capt. Mark McCaslin said. They located and stopped the vehicle in the 1400 block of North 8th Street.

The driver, Bernardo Bautista-Carrillo, 40, of Arkansas City, was arrested for an outstanding warrant and suspicion of DUI. He has since bonded out of jail.

McCaslin said while other officers were “securing transportation” for two passengers, one of them “entered the running K-9 patrol vehicle.” He said officers were able to get him out of the patrol car as he revved the engine and tried to get it in gear.

The 27-year-old Ark City resident, Toribio Matias Funez-Jucinto, was arrested for attempted felony theft, two counts of attempted aggravated battery of law enforcement officers, DUI, no driver’s license, and obstruction. He is being held in the Cowley County jail on $20,300 bond.
