The search is over for a woman accused of stealing the Slocomb police chief’s patrol car Tuesday.
Chief Don White tells WSFA 12 News that 24-year-old Tiffany Buryn was arrested in Holmes County, FL around 5 Tuesday afternoon.
Buryn is accused of stealing White’s unmarked 2012 black Dodge Charger around 10 a.m. on Middle Street in Slocomb.
WSFA 12 News reporter Hannah Lane reports that Chief White and another officer were out on patrol investigating burglaries and looking for suspects when they stopped a vehicle because the driver was acting suspicious.
Investigators say after pulling over the vehicle, a male driver and female passenger tried to escape. They were said to be throwing narcotics.
Police got the female under control and handcuffed her, but she tried to escape again. Authorities again brought the woman under control and handcuffed her with her hands behind her back.
Chief White then put the woman in the backseat of the patrol unit, with the vehicle running so the air conditioning would work.
Authorities say as they were trying to get the suspects’ car hooked up to a wrecker when somehow the handcuffed woman was able to get her hands to the front of her body, jump into the front seat and drive off.
Geneva County Sheriff deputies were in the area and passed the suspect. They attempted to pursue the woman but lost her as they were turning around.
Multiple agencies in Alabama and Florida searched for the woman.
Buryn has outstanding warrants in Houston and Geneva counties and Washington County, FL.
Authorities haven’t released the exact charges Buryn now faces in Slocomb. Police say the car she and the man were originally in was possibly stolen. If so, the man could also face charges.
