Two citizens came to the aid of an Austin police officer trying to pull a man out of a police car on Oct. 22.

Officers were called to Red River Street in downtown Austin around 11:50 p.m. after reports of a disturbance. A man told arriving police, 22-year-old Alexander Porter, was drunk and trying to get in his car. Officers approached Porter, who was standing in the street with his hands raised in the air.

Porter pulled away as the officer grabbed one of his hands. Making a run for it, Porter headed towards the patrol car, according to the arrest affidavit. Once he got in the driver’s seat, he pressed on the gas revving the engine.

Two bystanders saw the officer attempting to pull Porter out of the car as he resisted and tightened his grip on the steering wheel. The citizens helped the officer remove Porter from the car as the officer used his Tazer. Porter was held down by the citizens while the officer handcuffed him.

Porter faces charges for attempted theft and is being held on a $8,000 bond in the Travis County Jail.
