Officers from the Weed Police Department and the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office shot and killed a man Monday who was wanted for an earlier assault in which a police officer was attacked and subsequently had their Taser stolen.

According to police, during a search of the area, they encountered the wanted man near Shastina Drive on the Interstate Highway 5 overpass.

When officers confronted the man he resisted and a police canine was used to help subdue him. At this point officials say the suspect tried to injure the police dog and the level of violence escalated to the point that both the officer and the deputy fired their weapons and struck the man killing him.

Police say the man was wanted for an earlier incident in which he was approached by a Weed police officer after starting a fire, on a wood porch, directly in front of the Greyhound Bus Stop on South Weed Boulevard. When the officer attempted to arrest the man he resisted and a Taser was used.

Police went on to say the suspect, despite the use of the Taser, then attempted to steal the officer’s patrol car and a struggle ensued inside the vehicle during which  the suspect was pepper sprayed and eventually fled on foot taking the officer’s Taser with him.

In a press release the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office described the suspect as volatile and violently resisting.

Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus said both officers are on paid administrative leave and suffered no significant injuries.

Andrus also added that the dog was doing well but would be seeing a veterinarian today to make sure he suffered no lasting injuries.
