Lawrence police say a 21-year-old woman is back in custody after stealing a squad car while she was being arrested for shoplifting.
Police say Heather Johnson was arrested Thursday for stealing electronics from a Wal-Mart store. Lawrence Police Captain Gary Woodruff says Johnson was handcuffed in the back of the squad car, but she was able to climb into the front seat and drive off while the arresting officer was completing paperwork outside of the vehicle.
Police say Johnson drove the car less than two miles before diching it and calling her mother for a ride home. They say Johnson’s mother picked her up and immediately turned her in to police.
In addition to shoplifting charges, Johnson now faces felony charges for escape, auto theft and resisting law enforcement.
It wasn’t immediately known if she has an attorney.
