The looming threat of a transit strike apparently wasn’t the reason a Daly City man broke into a BART patrol car last weekend and swiped a gas card.

Rather, Kenneth Holden told police he needed fuel in case of a terrorist attack, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Holden, 27, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to multiple charges related to the burglary outside the Daly City BART Station on Sunday.

Officers said they found a window-smashed patrol car that had been ransacked and significantly damaged. A gas card had been taken from the vehicle, Wagstaffe said.

Police identified Holden after a witness reported to officers that Holden had earlier asked him to help him “steal a cop car,” Wagstaffe said.

Holden was reportedly located soon after and was allegedly in possession of the gas card. He told police, ‘In case of a terrorist attack, I wanted access to gas,’” Wagstaffe said.

Holden remains in custody on $45,000 bail. He had been a participant in a mental health program for felons but failed to complete his treatment, the district attorney added.

He is next expected in court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 28.
