Beach Club Road, situated between Montecito-Summerland and Carpinteria, features the multi-million-dollar beachfront homes of some of the area’s highest-profile celebrities and persons of wealth… all of whom consider the gated enclave a secure and safe respite from the prying eyes of the public and media.

After the events occurring on the evening of October 6th, many of those residents are reconsidering just how safe they may actually be.

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on that night, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, Santa Barbara County Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a trespasser observed on a neighboring property. It did not take long for a trio of SBSD patrol units to respond to the scene and locate Jeremy Bordegaray, 29, inside the reported residence. While Bordegaray was detained, deputies contacted the property owner who was not on the property at that time, and determined that “no one was authorized to have access to the residence.”

Bordegaray was then discovered to be in possession of a loaded handgun, and he was placed under arrest. He was then placed, handcuffed, in the rear of an SBSD black-and-white while deputies continued their investigation. Shortly thereafter, Bordegaray managed to kick his way through the plexiglass partition separating the vehicle’s rear seat from the front seat area—where a number of weapons and tactical gear were stored. He then managed to put the vehicle into gear and began to “drive the patrol car from the area,” Hoover said in her report to the media. Deputies immediately pursued the vehicle on foot, one of whom fired a number of shots at the moving vehicle which struck Bordegaray.

Bordegaray, a resident of San Luis Obispo County, was transported to Santa Barbara County Hospital in critical condition, and has been booked in absentia on charges of assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance while armed with a firearm, posssession of intent to sell methamphetamine, trespassing, resisting arrest, and providing false information to a peace officer.

He remains hospitalized in critical condition.
