Boston police officials say two officers were injured early Saturday morning when a suspect tried to hit them with a stolen police cruiser.

Wilfredo Rodriguez, 37, of South Boston, is facing charges that include assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle, and breaking and entering of a motor vehicle in the nighttime.

Investigators tell FOX 25 Rodriguez attempted to break into a car on Baxter Street just before 3:30 a.m. He fled when police arrived, but returned and took off in a police cruiser left running at the scene.

As Rodriguez attempted to flee, police opened fire. Rodriguez was not hit, but he struck at least one of the officers with the stolen cruiser while taking off.

Rodriguez was apprehended near the JFK/UMass MBTA Station moments later.

Officials say the injuries the officers sustained were minor.

Rodriguez will be arraigned Monday in South Boston District Court.

It’s not clear if Rodriguez has a lawyer.
