A man who crashed his car trying to evade police in Mississippi sped off in a police car he soon wrecked — then returned to the site in a third vehicle to shoot at deputies.

A deputy noticed Robinson driving erratically at 3 a.m. on Highway 61 in Lorman, police said. When the officer tried to pull over Robinson, the suspect sped off, hitting an embankment before running off.

A few minutes later, Robinson jumped into the patrol car and sped off, police said. He then returned in another vehicle and fired several shots at deputies before he was finally apprehended.

The deputy’s vehicle later was founded crashed into a ditch.

Robinson is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, felony taking a motor vehicle and possessing drugs with intent to distribute following Saturday’s episode, according to Sheriff Peter Walker. Walker said deputies found marijuana, about $2,000, knives and pills in Robinson’s car.

It wasn’t clear whether Robinson had an attorney. A call and email from The Associated Press to the sheriff’s office were not returned Sunday.
