East Chicago police recovered one of the department’s squad cars that had been reported stolen early Saturday.

Police Chief Mark Becker said an officer briefly left the unmarked squad car to use the restroom. When the officer returned, the vehicle was driving away on Columbus Drive.

The vehicle was recovered Saturday evening and was being towed to the station around 7 p.m.

Becker said there were no guns in the vehicle when it was stolen, but there were other police issued items inside of it. Police were uncertain if any of those items had been stolen before the vehicle was recovered.

Other details about the situation weren’t immediately available, but police continued investigating the matter Saturday night, Becker said.
