Anderson Police said they were trying to arrest a wanted man, but he was able to steal one of their patrol cars while handcuffed before crashing it during a chase Thursday.
Police said they were serving an arrest warrant for 35-year-old James Moore at the Southerner Motel about 2:30 p.m. for the sheriff’s office.
When they located Moore, police said he gave a fake name and age before they were able to confirm he was the man wanted on charges of grand larceny $10,000 or more, two counts of burglary, malicious damage $10,000 or more, four failure to appear bench warrants and one count of petit larceny $2,000 or less.
Moore was handcuffed with his arms behind him then placed in the backseat of an officer’s marked patrol car while they waited for deputies to arrive to pick him up, according to the police report.
Meanwhile, Moore squeezed through the patrol car cage’s sliding glass window that was previously closed, climbing into the driver’s seat and hit the gear into drive before he could be stopped, police said. He sped off on Williamston Road towards Highway 29 and police chased after him, the report said.
He cut through a Shell gas station and turned right on 29 before losing control and stopping in front of the motel, police said.
Then he took off running on foot, hopping a fences but was eventually stopped as an officer pointed his Glock 22 at him and ordered him to the ground, police said.
He complied and had his handcuffs, which were now in front of him, re-secured to his back and was placed in leg restraints, police said. Moore was also charged with grand larceny greater than $10,000, escape, failure to stop for blue lights, prowling and misrepresentation of ID to law enforcement.
