Butte County sheriffs arrested a man after he led sheriffs on a cross county chase in a stolen police car.

The man stole the Butte County Sheriffs patrol car around 7:30 p.m. on Monday night.

The patrol car was locked, but the keys were left inside the car. The suspect, Omar Medina Cazares, 39, broke the driver’s side window with a rock to steal the car.

Carzares led police east down Nelson Avenue toward Highway 99. The man continued to race away south down Highway 99 through the city of Gridley.

Police had to use spike strips at 3 different locations. Cazares avoided the first two spike strips in Gridley and Live Oak. The 3rd attempt worked though, stopping the car south of Live Oak at the Lomo train track crossing.

A Yuba County Sheriff’s K-9 was deployed. Cazares fought with the K-9 and was eventually tased by a Yuba Sutter CHP Officer. Cazares was arrested and transported to Oroville Medical Center for medical clearance and will be booked into the Butte County Jail.
