A search was taking place Tuesday afternoon for a man who robbed a convenience store and got away — in a Plantation police cruiser.
Police spokesman Phil Toman said that on Tuesday morning officials got a call about a fight at a convenience store, but it turned out to be an armed robbery.
An officer saw the man “and the guy was running, so [the officer] got out real quick” of the squad car, Toman said. However, the suspect “doubled back” and got into the police car — which still had its keys in the ignition — and drove off.
Toman said the suspect drove a short distance and “dumped” the car at an apartment complex in Lauderhill near Northwest 42 Avenue and Northwest 19 Street.
A search of the area was taking place by police from Lauderhill and from Plantation.
The stolen squad car could be seen inside a fenced-in parking lot. A tow truck was preparing to remove the car.
