A woman stole an unmarked Nebraska State Patrol car from a crash scene on Interstate 80 and led authorities on a 30-mile chase before the vehicle was successfully disabled by spike sticks.
The incident began about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when a Pontiac G6 crashed into the rear of a semitrailer truck east of Kearney. The woman, who was in the Pontiac, drove off in the unmarked car of a Nebraska State Patrol investigator who had stopped to render aid.
The woman sped west and was pursued by other State Patrol officers. Authorities put down spike strips multiple times before disabling the vehicle. The car came to a stop in a ditch between the Elm Creek and Overton exits.
Authorities took the woman, who is from Chariton, Iowa, to a hospital to be checked out. She will face charges of motor vehicle theft, felony flight to avoid arrest and driving under the influence of drugs.
Both county and state officers are assisting in locating the vehicle.
