The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office has not yet identified the man who died Friday morning after he was stunned with a Taser by a deputy.Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said authorities received a phone call at 7:23 a.m. Friday regarding a man’s disorderly conduct at the 301 Kwik Shop on U.S. 301 in Parkton.
According to the caller, the man came into the parking lot, assaulted several people, then entered the store with a stick or pipe in his hand. When deputies arrived, they found the man away from the store. After they approached him, he assaulted them and attempted to take the patrol car, Sealey said in a news release.
When the man continued to assault the deputies, they used a Taser on him but it seemed to have no effect, Sealey said.
When he was removed from the vehicle, the man once again assaulted officers and was stunned with a Taser a second time, the sheriff said. He then tried to take a different patrol vehicle.
As deputies continued to try to subdue the man, he passed out, Sealey said.
Officers performed CPR on him, in an attempt to revive him and he was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The case is under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, as is routine in such cases. As per protocol, Sealey said, the deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
