One person is in custody after a suspect took off with a police chief’s patrol unit Monday afternoon.

A man with an active warrant attempted to pass a background check at a pawn shop in the Vernon West Plaza. The Northmoor Police Chief responded and attempted to take that suspect into custody. The chief had the suspect in handcuffs and he was in the back of the chief’s patrol unit when that suspect was somehow able to break away.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said that suspect jumped into the driver’s seat of the police chief’s patrol unit and took off, attempting to strike the chief in the process. That’s when the police chief shot at the suspect and injured him.

The suspect was seen bleeding as he fled the scene in that patrol unit. He then wrecked that vehicle into a telephone pole a short drive away from that original scene. Witnesses saw the man run from the car.

He is described as a white male, approximately 5’9″ to 5’11” tall, weighing around 150 pounds. He has dark hair and was last seen with a black t-shirt covering his hands that were still cuffed.

That suspect was taken into custody more than an hour after the original incident following a large police search near NW Vivion Road and NW Waukomis. The suspect, who has yet to be identified, is believed to be OK.
