A Bridgeton man was arrested after driving down the boardwalk and then trying to flee from police after attempting to steal one of their cars.
Police say 37 year-old Robert Carter was seen driving on the Wildwood Boardwalk around 8:00 Sunday morning. After being told to stop by police, they say he continued to drive erratically a short distance before eventually pulling over. Authorities say Carter then exited the vehicle and became irate at the officers before running towards one of their patrol cars. Carter allegedly jumped into the marked vehicle and was attempting to flee when he was physically removed by one of the officers. After a brief struggle, he was taken into custody. Police say that two children, ages 14 and 5, were in the back of Carter’s car during the entire ordeal.
Carter is in the Cape May County Correctional Facility on $200,000 bail and is charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, carjacking, and endangering the welfare of a child.
