A Valley man came face-to-face with the driver of a stolen city truck and told ABC15 that the driver “had a look of evil.”
Police said Ronald Chante, 51, stole a Phoenix police utility truck and crashed into police officers during the chase, as well as other cars.
“He wasn’t going to stop,” said Michael Knapp.
Knapp said Chante rammed the stolen truck into his car when Knapp refused to give him the car keys at a gas station near Broadway Road and Rural Road on Sunday.
Records show Chante was in trouble with the law dating back 15 years.
People who knew Chante said he had a drug problem, but he was obviously mentally ill and needed help.
Police said after Chante crashed into several officers’ vehicles, they felt the need to shoot and Chante was killed.
Chante was arrested a week earlier for allegedly making death threats against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
