Fairbanks police have recovered a patrol car following the Tuesday night arrest of a man who managed to steal the car and escape, according to FPD officials.

Julius “JT” Chambers, 28, was taken into custody following a report of a domestic disturbance on 29th Avenue, said FPD spokesperson Lt. Matt Soden. The reported disturbance was determined by police at the scene to not be a crime, Soden said. However, police were required to arrest Chambers for warrants related to probation violations.

While in the back of a patrol car, police believe Chambers was able to bring his hands from behind his back to his front, Soden said. Chambers then snuck from the back of the car into the driver’s seat and make his getaway.

FPD investigators discovered the stolen patrol on the 2800 block of Mercer Street some hours later in the early Wednesday morning hours, though there was no sign of Chambers, Soden said. After abandoning the patrol, police believe Chambers may have slipped into a wooded area near the area where the car was recovered.

Soden said Chambers should not be approached due to his history of carrying concealed weapons, though he was not in possession of a weapon at the time of his arrest.

Chambers is 5-feet, 5-inches and white. He was wearing a black “Keep Calm and Chive On” hooded sweat shirt Tuesday night.
