The man accused of stabbing a New Britain police officer appeared before a judge Monday.

Police said Christopher Denigris, 51, of New Britain, was in the middle of a fight with his common-law wife when he stabbed her and a responding officer.

Police said it happened around 2 a.m. Sunday at an Emily Drive home.

According to police, Denigris charged at the two responding officers and fought with them when they arrived at the scene. Denigris then stabbed Officer Bruce Moro twice, and then attempted to stab another officer.

Moro was transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious injures, however, police said he is expected to recover.

The second officer was not seriously injured because a notebook he had in his shirt pocket prevented the blade of the knife from penetrating, officials said.

After a brief struggle with the officers, police said Denigris then took off in a police cruiser. However, Denigris crashed the cruiser into a nearby fence and police were able to apprehend him.

Denigris’ common-law wife, who was only identified as a 48-year-old woman, was also stabbed during the incident. She also suffered numerous abrasions and contusions to her body, police said. According to police, her injures are non-life-threatening in nature.

Denigris was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, first-degree assault, assault on police, kidnapping, first-degree larceny, and criminal violation of protective order.

According to court records, Denigris is no stranger to the law.

He has a criminal past that includes possession of narcotics, disorderly conduct, reckless driving and breach of peace.

He was on probation at the time of his arrest Sunday.

He is being held on a $1 million bond.
