Winnipeg police had a marked cruiser car stolen from a Headingley gas station as officers were trying to apprehend suspects of another stolen vehicle in the early morning hours Thursday.
In what they’d only refer to as a “significant incident” around 2:30 a.m., police say came across a stolen vehicle that AIR1 had tracked to a gas station in Headingley, just west of the perimeter.
Police say the incident escalated when, while they were attempted to secure the safety of those in the area, one of the suspects jacked one of the police cars on scene.
Both Winnipeg police officers and members of the RCMP arrested the suspect on the TransCanada Highway near PTH 26.
As a result of the significant police resources required, police said more than 300 calls for service were awaiting dispatch Thursday morning.
The WPS said they would continue to triage calls on a priority basis and thank the public in advance for their patience.
Police are also set to meet with the media at noon about the overnight fracas.
