Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said deputies responded to a domestic call between 19-year-old Chance Dearman and his parents on Big Point Road in Moss Point on Friday night.

The sheriff said a deputy left his patrol car running, but locked the door. Ezell says the 19-year-old ran out of the house and started to head toward the car to steal it.

The deputy reportedly had the key remote in his pocket, and the door unlocked as he walked to the car to stop the suspect. After Dearman got in the vehicle, a patrolman shot one of the tires to try to slow the car down, but Dearman kept driving.

After a short chase, deputies used a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle. The chase never went above 60 mph. The patrol car has minor damage and repairs will be made next week.

Dearman was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail. He is charged with carjacking and felony pursuit, and he is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for each charge.
