Authorities in Roscommon County are searching for a prison escapee who stole a deputy’s handgun and then fled in a transport vehicle.

Michigan State Police from the Houghton Lake Post told TV5 it occurred as an Arenac County deputy was transporting a prisoner from Roscommon to Standish on Monday morning.

It happened near M-55, west of Interstate 75 in Backus Township, sometime before 10:30 a.m. The vehicle was located, but the inmate remains on the loose, according to officials.

Cadillac’s 9&10 News said the inmate is 29-year-old Everett Alan Robinson. A Department of Corrections website states that Robinson stands 5 foot 10 inches tall, weighing 212 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. UpNorthLive.com reported via Twitter that the Arenac County Sheriff said Robinson was in custody on a home invasion charge.

He was last seen wearing orange clothing. 9&10 News also state that a helicopter has joined in the search for the man and police have established a perimeter. Houghton Lake Public Schools are currently on lockdown when the search continues.

According to the Offender Tracking Information System, Robinson served nine years on a criminal sexual conduct charge.
