A 29-year-old Alabama man was arrested Friday after Hillsborough police say he led them on a chase after a stolen car report.

Davon Rucker also is suspected of a carjacking in Atlanta that left an elderly woman seriously injured and her car stolen.

Investigators say that the car Rucker was driving when he was captured in Orange County was registered to the Atlanta victim.

A Hillsborough police officer, Sgt. Douglas Hemingway, was injured during Rucker’s arrest. He was treated and released from UNC Hospitals.
A town news release gives this account:

About 10:23 a.m., Hemingway responded to a 911 call about a man trying to steal a car from the Quick Mart gas station on Churton Street. A witness told police that Rucker drove into the parking lot of the Orange County Department of Social Services on Mayo Street

As Hemingway arrived, Rucker reportedly put the car in reverse and struck two parked vehicles. He then fled on foot toward Churton. Hemingway followed in his vehicle and stopped Rucker in front of the KFC restaurant across from Capital Ford.

After a short foot chase, police say, Rucker tried to steal Hemingway’s patrol car. The officer pulled Rucker out through the driver’s side window and struggled with the suspect. More officers soon arrived to provide backup and took Rucker into custody at 10:31 a.m.

He’s charged with assault of a law enforcement officer with injury and possession of a stolen vehicle, as well as resisting an officer. More charges are pending. He was held in the Orange County Jail under $50,000 bond.
