It was probably the weirdest thing that has happened in Montgomery County in a while.

“It’s at the top of the list,” said Montgomery County Sheriff Bubba Nix.

A deputy was stopped by a resident who told him that a naked man was “running up and down” Middleton Road shortly after midnight Sunday. The deputy found William Shawn Mann, 27, who was not wearing one stitch of clothing.

Mann, of Yazoo City, jumped on the hood of the patrol car, then on to the roof of the vehicle. From there, he jumped on the deputy’s back.

Montgomery County Sheriff Bubba Nix said the two scuffled and the deputy was finally able to get him off his back.

“He drew his taser and shot him and he kept coming towards him and he put in another cartridge and shot him again,” Nix said. “When he got him on the ground to try to subdue him, two state troopers got there.”

Mann was tased again once the troopers got there as the three officers tried to get the handcuffs on him, but that didn’t stop him. At that point, somehow he was able to get free and steal the patrol car.

Crashing through several road signs, he finally wrecked the car and crashed at Winona Dry Cleaners.

Some people at a nearby car wash were washing a boat to take out on Mother’s Day, and they saw the accident and thought it was a deputy who had the wreck. They began to approach the car to help him, Nix said.

It was not a deputy. It was Mann.

“That’s when he jumped out of the car and they scattered,” Nix said.

Mann attempted to steal their truck from the car wash. He was finally stopped there by the deputy and the two troopers and arrested.

“He fought the whole time we took him to the hospital. We got him to the jail around 4 a.m.,” Nix said.

Mann is charged with three counts of simple assault on law enforcement, grand larceny, attempted grand larceny and felony malicious mischief. His bond was set at $200,000 on Tuesday. He remains in jail.

Blood tests showed Mann had cocaine, marijuana, and meth in his system. He was out on bond in Yazoo County for a felon in possession of a weapon charge. He has served time in jail for a drug conviction. He was visiting relatives in Winona.

The deputy and state troopers were not injured, but Nix said this call is another example of how officers often have no idea what to expect when they’re dispatched to a scene.

“People don’t realize what law enforcement goes through from call to call,” he said.

Mann is in custody at the Carroll County Sheriff”s Department.
