A freak accident at the Mishawaka Riverwalk sent a city police car into a wall along St. Joseph River late Wednesday afternoon.

Mishawaka Assistant Police Chief Dan Gebo tells WSBT Corporal Ryan Corbett was inside the nearby 7-Eleven at Mishawaka Avenue and Main Street with his squad car parked outside.

Gebo says the car somehow slipped out of gear, crossed Mishawaka Avenue, slid down a hill to the riverwalk and hit a wall, keeping the squad car from landing in the water.

It happened shortly before 5:30 p.m., a time when the riverwalk is usually busy.

“Thank God no one got hurt or killed,” Gebo said.

Gebo calls it a “freak accident” and said Corp. Corbett didn’t do anything wrong. Corbett was back at work Wednesday night.

The squad car was towed, and mechanics from the Mishawaka Street Department were looking at it to see how it slipped out of gear.
