A marked Adams County sheriff deputy’s vehicle was stolen Monday morning and recovered a short time later after it crashed.

Sgt. Paul Gregory, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said deputies responded just before 9:10 a.m. to a house near 66th Avenue and Knox Court on a report of a disturbance.

The suspect was identified as Bernard Martinez, 31.

Gregory said when the first deputy arrived, he was “immediately confronted by a male, and he and the male got into a struggle, a fight.”

In the course of the fight, Martinez was able to break away from the deputy and jump into the patrol vehicle, officials said.

“Fortunately, we had another deputy who was just pulling in,” Gregory said.

That deputy chased the stolen vehicle.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper who joined the chase crashed into the stolen car at 70th Avenue and Pecos Street to end the pursuit at 9:25 a.m.

The deputy whose car was stolen and the trooper who crashed into the stolen vehicle were transferred to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Gregory said.

Martinez was arrested after the crash.
