Memphis police say the police car was crashed by a man who briefly stole the vehicle.

We’re told an officer stopped to talk to a man walking along I-240 between Lamar Ave. and Airways Blvd. around 3:30 a.m. because pedestrians are not allowed on the interstate.

The man was not arrested or handcuffed but was detained in the back of the officer’s car. Police describe the man as “delusional.”

We’re told the squad car is an older model that does not have reinforced windows. The man reportedly kicked out the back window, climbed out of the car and got into the driver’s seat.

Police say he drove about 300 yards toward oncoming traffic before veering off I-240 and crashing into a fence.

No one was seriously injured although we’re told the officer involved will be taken to the hospital for observation.

Charges have not been filed yet.
