A Baltimore police car was stolen while it was parked overnight in Catonsville, Baltimore County police said.

A city officer reported the theft to county authorities at 6:41 a.m., Baltimore County police Corp. John Wachter said. The unmarked 2014 silver Chevrolet Impala had been parked outside a home in the 300 block of Orley Road at 10:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The officer told county police that the car was gone when he returned to the site of his parked vehicle at 6:40 a.m.

Police would not say why the car was parked there.

No firearms or explosives were in the car, Wachter said, but two magazines containing a total of 28 rounds of .40-caliber ammunition were taken. Also inside: A police radio, electric stun gun, three bags with assorted police equipment, pepper spray, a police vest, a SWAT vest and a riot helmet.

Both Baltimore County and Baltimore police declined to release the identity of the officer who had parked the car.

Baltimore police spokesman Det. Sgt. Jarron L. Jackson said some officers in the city department have access to police cars 24-7 and are allowed to take cars home because they may need to respond to emergencies at any time. But he declined to say if that was the case here.

“We’re going to let Baltimore County finish their investigation first, and then we’ll go from there,” he said.

The Regional Auto Theft Task Force, which includes officers from the city and county, is investigating the theft, Wachter said.
