Virginia State Police say a pedestrian on Interstate 66 hit an Arlington County police officer, stole the officer’s cruiser and led police on a chase.
Troopers say about noon Thursday, a man was walking on the interstate in Prince William County. A trooper and the county officer approached him. The man hit the county officer in the face, got into the cruiser and fled.
Police from several agencies chased the cruiser, forcing it to stop on the shoulder. The suspect ran from the cruiser and jumped into the bed of a stopped pickup truck, swung a shovel at officers, then climbed over the jersey wall. The man continued to fight officers, injuring two. He was subdued and arrested.
Thirty-seven-year-old Dexter Gibson of Herndon has been charged with numerous offenses.
