A 47-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of a Peel police officer in Mississauga Thursday morning.

The stabbing and subsequent theft of a police cruiser occurred in the area of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Dundas Street at around 11 a.m.

According to police, officers responded to a call for a man ‘who appeared to be suffering a mental health crisis.’

Police are investigating after a police officer was stabbed and his cruiser was stolen by a male suspect.

An officer has been seriously injured by a knife after a police cruiser was stolen in Mississauga.

At the scene, an altercation occurred in which the officer was stabbed.

The man then fled the scene in a stolen police vehicle.

Hold and secures were briefly put in place at area schools as a result.

The officer was transported to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. He is currently listed as being in stable condition, and is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

The suspect was located a short time later and taken into custody.

Police said a gun was fired during the altercation but no one was hit. The Special Investigation’s Unit will not be investigating.

Farhad Akhalwaya, of Mississauga, is charged with attempted murder, theft over $5,000 and uttering threats.

He is being held for a bail hearing and will appear in court in Brampton Friday.
