A man was hospitalized after stealing a police cruiser in front of the Long Beach Police Department headquarters in downtown Long Beach Monday night and subsequently crashing the car into two parked vehicles a few blocks away.
Authorities said police responded to a call for service in front of LBPD headquarters, in the 400 block of West Broadway, at 8:40PM on Monday, April 16.
“Once on scene, a male subject was able to enter a black and white police vehicle and drive off eastbound for approximately two blocks, where he crashed into two unoccupied parked cars,” said LBPD Sgt. Brad Johnson.
The man was immediately arrested and transported to a local hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.
Authorities said the police cruiser was unoccupied and with the engine running at the time of the theft.
The investigation remains ongoing.
