A 26-year-old Pittsfield Township man was arrested early today after police say he stole a township patrol car from the parking lot of a business.According to a news release, the police car was parked in the 4900 block of Washtenaw Avenue at 6:40 a.m., and the officer was investigating a complaint when the man stole the patrol car.

Police did not say whether the patrol car was locked or provide details of exactly how it was taken. As the vehicle drove away, the officer notified dispatch it was being taken, the news release said.

The dispatcher was able to track the vehicle and update officers of its location. A Michigan State Police trooper found the car and conducted a traffic stop, the release said.

The suspect was arrested without incident, and the vehicle was not damaged, police said.

The suspect was jailed on a charge of unlawfully driving away an automobile.
